Sit down with the HBS team to talk through your skills and find your best fit with the organization. This is your chance to show us your personality and the skills you bring to the organization. Qualified volunteers will be asked to move forward to the next steps.

Step 3 - Orientation

Meet the other volunteers, understand the expectations of working with HBS, and get a deeper understanding of the HBS mission.

  • This role is for you if…

    Responsibilities

    • Identify new opportunities for HBS to connect and collaborate with other organizations

    • Make meaningful introductions between HBS and other leaders in the community

    • Manage email communication between the HBS team and new connections  

    Qualifications

    • Experience facilitating corporate and professional connections and relationships 

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to engage with volunteers, community members, and external partners.

    • Ability to represent the nonprofit’s mission and values to external audiences and build awareness about the organization’s initiatives.

    • Strong understanding of local community dynamics and the ability to engage with diverse populations.

    • Sensitivity to cultural, social, and economic differences, and ability to create inclusive programs that reach underserved communities.

    Time Commitment

    Responsibilities

    • Event Setup & Breakdown – Help with event setup, including arranging seating, decorating, and organizing event materials, and assist with post-event clean-up.

    • Guest Check-In – Greet and assist guests with event registration, ensuring they feel welcomed and know where to go.

    • Provide Event Information – Be a go-to source of info for guests during the event, whether it’s about schedules, activities, or where the snacks are!

    • Assist with Event Activities – Help with running activities, raffles, or games, ensuring everything runs smoothly and guests are engaged.

    • Support the Volunteer Team – Offer support to fellow volunteers, helping with their tasks and ensuring everyone has what they need to succeed.

    • Manage Event Materials – Keep track of handouts, brochures, and promotional materials to ensure they’re available when needed.

    • Handle Refreshments – Help with serving refreshments or managing food and beverage areas, making sure everything stays stocked and tidy.

    • Monitor Event Flow – Help ensure that the event schedule stays on track and assist with crowd management during peak moments.

    • Provide Accessibility Support – Assist guests with special needs or accessibility requirements to ensure a smooth and inclusive experience.

    Qualifications

    • Enthusiasm for supporting nonprofit events and contributing to a positive cause.

    • Excellent communication skills – You’re friendly, approachable, and can chat with anyone!

    • Ability to stay organized and think on your feet during fast-paced events.

    • Flexibility – Events can be unpredictable, so a flexible mindset is a must!

    • Strong attention to detail – Whether it's ensuring materials are in the right spot or checking off tasks, you don’t miss a beat.

    • Proficiency in technology beyond basic skills – You can easily navigate event check-in systems or help with event-related tech needs (no expert level required, just comfort with technology!).

    • Ability to work well in teams – You're a team player who can collaborate and contribute to the collective success of the event.

    • Previous experience volunteering at events or in a similar capacity is a plus, but not required.

    • A love for helping others – Whether it's guiding attendees or providing event support, you're motivated by the opportunity to make things run smoothly.

    • Reliability and punctuality – You take your commitments seriously and will show up on time to help everything go off without a hitch.

    Time Commitment: 

    10-15 hours per month depending on the event schedule

    • You have a constant pulse on pop culture and always know what's going on in the world

    Responsibilities

    • Draft press releases for all HBS events

    • Identify media placement opportunities

    • Connect the HBS team with decision makers at media outlets

    • Serve as liaison between HBS and press at all in-person events

    Qualifications

    • Prior experience in public relations, media outreach, or communications is preferred. The ability to engage with media outlets, build relationships with journalists, and manage the organization's media presence is crucial.

    • A creative mindset for developing engaging PR campaigns, social media content, and community outreach initiatives. The ability to adapt to unexpected challenges and think outside the box is a key asset.

    • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.

  • This is for you if…

    • You’re always online and can recite trending social media audios without batting an eyelash

    • You have experience running an organization’s social media accounts

    • You love the social space and stay up to date with trends and algorithm changes

    • You’re a whiz at social media strategy and love brainstorming ideas on social growth

    • You’re great on your feet and know how to pull together a post to meet an unexpected or timely need

    Responsibilities

    • Schedule all posts across the HBS social media channels

      • Instagram

      • Facebook

      • LinkedIn

      • YouTube

    • Draft content calendars and social media strategies

    • Write all social copy

    • Graphic design in Canva

    Qualifications

    • Ability to create and manage digital content, including graphics, posts, and event promotions, to raise awareness and encourage participation.

    • 3-5 years of experience running professional social media accounts

    • Demonstrated success growing social media accounts

    • Must present a portfolio of previous work (preferably with analytics included)

    Time Commitment:

     15-20 hours per month

  • This role is for you if…

    • You are a natural born leader who knows how to inspire a team

    • You are a team player that can fall in wherever you are needed

    • You are great at seeing other people's strengths and weaknesses

    • You are a master (I would prefer “highly skilled”) at conflict resolution and can easily solve problems that arise among the team

    Responsibilities

    • Serve as the point of contact and team leader for volunteers at all in-person events

    • Ensure all events are properly staffed with the necessary volunteer support

    • Manage and update list of the contact information for all volunteers

    • Appoint responsibilities to new volunteers 

    • Identify the need for new volunteers to fill gaps in the team

    • Lead new volunteer onboarding sessions and teach them to champion the HBS mission

    Qualifications

    • Experience leading teams of 10 or more in a professional or volunteer capacity

    • Ability to inspire, motivate, and support volunteers to achieve organizational goals.

    • Ability to delegate tasks effectively while providing guidance and support.

    • Comfort in presenting and speaking to groups, including new volunteers and organizational stakeholders.

    • Ability to give clear instructions and provide constructive feedback.

    • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills to handle scheduling, event planning, and reporting.

    • Ability to anticipate potential challenges and proactively address issues before they arise.

    • Strong decision-making skills, with the ability to handle unexpected situations calmly and effectively.

    Responsibilities

    • Assist with Event Support – Help out with the setup, breakdown, and running of events, making sure everything goes smoothly and everyone has a great time.

    • Help with Donations – Sort, organize, and prepare donations for distribution or fundraising, ensuring everything is in good condition and ready to go.

    • Support Day-to-Day Operations – Provide hands-on help around the office or in the field, from answering phones to helping with administrative tasks.

    • Engage with the Community – Be a friendly face at outreach activities, assisting with community events or workshops and helping others feel welcomed and informed.

    • Assist Other Volunteers and Staff – Jump in wherever help is needed, whether it’s offering an extra pair of hands or pitching in on a special project.

    Qualifications

    • A willingness to learn and a can-do attitude – No experience required, just an eagerness to contribute!

    • A friendly, approachable demeanor – You’re happy to interact with staff, volunteers, and the community.

    • Strong communication skills – You can ask questions when needed and share ideas to make things even better.

    • Flexibility – Tasks may change depending on the day, so you’re adaptable and ready for anything.

    • Reliability and punctuality – You show up when you say you will, and you're committed to making an impact.

    • Assist in copy and content writing for all HBS-owned social media accounts

    • Provide proofreading assistance for HBS projects including but not limited to, email copy, print materials, webpages, social media posts, etc.

    • Write the content for the monthly HBS email newsletter

    Qualifications

    • Past experience writing in a professional or leadership capacity

    • Must present a portfolio of previous work
